Susan Crimmins is an intuitive and an inspirational speaker who conducts trainings, workshops and retreats in integrative healing, and has served as a consultant to educators, therapists, media and criminal justice professionals across the nation. As an integrative healing practitioner she works with individuals to restore balance within their physiology and their lives after experiencing trauma and life altering events.

Having sustained multiple losses and traumas throughout her life that resulted in numerous relocations and shifts, Dr. Crimmins has become an expert in mentoring people who are in transition and who are longing for something more from life. During the course of her own journey in healing and transformation, she discovered that each person’s path is unique and cannot be located in the wisdom of another.

In the 1990’s both the death of her niece and her NIH-funded research endeavors in homicide, substance abuse and maltreatment influenced her to shift from epidemiologically based work to include innovative clinical and indigenous interventions in the healing of trauma. From this juncture, a spiritual opening occurred that invited her to explore the nexus between science and soul, which she now incorporates in all of her endeavors.

Dr. Crimmins received her Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice from Northeastern University in Boston, MA. She then obtained her Master of Social Work (MSW) from Hunter College School of Social Work and her Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in criminal justice from City University of New York, John Jay College.

Dr. Crimmins also was a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of New York for over thirty years. She has worked extensively in the social sciences as a criminologist, social work clinician, researcher, professor, and administrator. To balance her scientific curiosities, in a quest to discover “what works” in the healing of trauma, she has pursued training in various healing modalities including: Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Healing Touch, Organic Intelligence (OI), Flowtrition, Family and Systemic Constellations and Shamanism. She holds certifications as an Energy Healer Therapist (EHT) and as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP). In addition, Dr. Crimmins is an Advanced Instructor and guest faculty with Eponaquest, specializing in equine facilitated learning for personal and leadership development.

Susan with her horse Walter

Her involvement with horses is the result of a calling where, in April 2010, a horse came to visit her in a dream. Beckoning her stood a beautiful chestnut mare whose face was characterized by huge brown eyes that revealed a lake behind them. She recalls waking up with a smile and the thought “that was such a lovely dream. ” It was a Saturday and when her phone rang a few hours later, she could not have anticipated what was to happen next. A woman was calling who had heard that Dr. Crimmins was an energy healer and she wanted her to come heal her horse, who was having difficulty with lameness. Protesting that she knew nothing about horses, Dr. Crimmins took this request into meditation, where the same horse visited, said her name is “Guinevere” and to please come immediately. Upon calling the woman back, she confirmed that was her horse, and Dr. Crimmins realized that this was a calling. She responded with another energy healer colleague and they cleared blockage from both the human’s and the horse’s heart areas, which subsequently resulted in the clearing of lameness, as verified by subsequent medical follow-up.

This initiated Dr. Crimmins into the majesty and alchemy of horse wisdom, where she has come to honor horses as healers and teachers who master and model BE-ING. Her commitment to bringing the best of science and soul forward in a heart centered practice of journeying with clients in transition is passionate and unwavering. Dr. Crimmins has an integrative healing practice in Topanga, CA where she often partners with her horse, Rebel and his wild mustang herd.

Meet Rebel and the Herd

The Herd is comprised of nine horses—all geldings-- six of whom are wild mustangs, and a badass pony, a thoroughbred, and my horse, Rebel, a Missouri Fox Trotter who thinks he is a Mustang?! They live at liberty on a private ranch in Topanga Canyon that offers a breathtaking view of the Topanga mountains.

While each herd member is known for his distinctive personality and unique gifts, I’m always amazed at their generosity of heart when they are able to come together as a unified herd on behalf of serving a human in need!

Science has demonstrated the physiological benefits of the oxytocin response and heart rate variability (HRV) coherence when humans interact with horses (Callara, et. al, 2024), however, after fifteen years of my observing horses with humans, there appears to be much more happening between them than is currently known empirically. I refer to this simply as the ‘mystery’ where other states of consciousness and knowing are awakened through our senses so that solutions or missing pieces of a puzzle begin to appear seemingly out of nowhere. I’m no longer surprised when aha moments of synchronicity or insight show up that serve as guiding next steps for a human to follow, if they so choose.

All horses have something to teach us if we are open and willing to listen and learn. In my experience, Rebel and his wild mustang herd are among the best I have learned from and have heard that those humans who have crossed paths with them are forever changed by their time together.
